Diet and Stretch Marks

When it comes to food, there are all kinds of diet such as Mediterranean diet, diet to lose weight and so on. Having enough food is the body’s requirement to metabolize the calories and for the cells to function properly. This is because diet can affect weight which affects the production of hormones. To the extent that your diet can cause you to gain or lose weight rapidly, thereby affecting your hormones. However no foods are proven to cause stretch marks. So if you eat a lot of certain food, it will not cause stretch marks to develop.

Weight gain or loss has a notable effect on your body's hormones. It is those hormones, which are present in the skin that cause stretch marks to appear. The body’s hormones related to weight gain, pregnancy, puberty or other events, cause stretch marks.

To maintain healthy skin, you have been told to drink plenty of water. It helps prevent stretch marks, too. Proper water intake keeps your skin soft and they are less likely to develop stretch marks. However, caffeine can increase your risk of stretch marks. If you're stuck on your caffeinated coffee or tea, make sure you balance the fluids. Drink just as much - or more - water as you drink coffee, tea or soda.

On a side note, stretch marks can also result from nutritional deficiency. Be sure to consume foods that promote skin health particularly zinc-rich foods such as nuts or fish, foods high in vitamins A and C such as carrots, tomatoes, citrus fruits and protein-rich foods such as eggs, soy bean, fish, etc.

It is safe to assume that as you take a normal diet that is rich of proteins, vitamins and roughage while eliminating fat, you can help to reduce stretch marks on your body. After all, stretch marks are also cause by putting on weight quickly on various parts of the body. This is obvious in pregnancy and puberty when the girl starts to put on weight around the thighs and breasts. So your diet directly affects the appearance or disappearance of stretch marks. Maintain a healthy weight with optimum body mass index or BMI for short. It is the best gauge to tell if a person is obese, overweight or not. For a fat person, extreme dieting and quickly losing weight can also cause the skin to sag and stretch marks visible on such organs. So you need to maintain a normal weight to ward off stretch marks that are unsightly and ugly.

Unfortunately, skin will not bounce back in its pure state if it's been stretched by rapid growth due to pregnancy, weight gain, or extreme weight loss. Instead, it becomes decorated by a form of scarring called stretch marks, or striae. Stretch marks occur in the dermis, the elastic middle layer of skin that allows it to retain its shape. However, when constantly stretched, the dermis can break down leaving behind stretch marks. Both men and women can get stretch marks on several areas of their bodies.
